As an individual who came from working in industry for three years after my Undergraduate degree, I have found the course extremely interesting and the support from the staff has made it easy to integrate back into education. The course has provided me with an in depth understanding of cutting-edge techniques that are relevant to current research, as well as knowledge of the design of novel therapeutics in the up-and-coming field of Immunotherapy. It is an exciting time to study Immunology and Immunotherapy at the University of Birmingham.
Course Structure This course will run over 12 months in a full-time-mode. While the exact content may change, here’s what you can expect to study each semester. This is based on a full time Masters course.
The term begins with a module on fundamental concepts in immunology and a research techniques module which includes discussion of cutting-edge research publications. The term finishes with a more in depth look at immunological processes and how unwanted or defective immune responses can result in cancer, autoimmunity and transplant rejection.
In this term you'll learn more about immune mediated disease with a focus on established, new and cutting-edge immunotherapeutic approaches to cancer and autoinflammatory and autoimmune disease. Topics include the use of monoclonal antibodies, CAR T cells, checkpoint blockade and vaccination against disease and infection. The sessions are given by clinicians involved in immunotherapy as well as scientists.
In this term you'll start your laboratory research project. In this section of the course you'll be fully immersed in your chosen laboratory for three and a half months. You'll receive full training in relevant bench techniques and will participate in laboratory, departmental and school activities such as scientific seminars, lab meetings and journal clubs. You'll also present a poster and submit a 10,000 word dissertation of your work.
