The MSc Clinical Trials programme at Birmingham has been truly eye-opening — it not only deepened my understanding of the entire trial process, from design to publication, but also gave me the chance to hear directly from professionals like statisticians, auditors, and PPIE members. Learning from their perspectives helped me explore different roles and refine my own career goals. Plus, studying in one of the UK’s largest, most connected cities made it all the more convenient and rewarding.
Course Structure This course will run over 12 months in a full-time-mode. There's also scope to undertake the programme on a part-time basis or flexibly (up to 5 years). While the exact content may change, here’s what you can expect to study each semester. This is based on a full time Masters course.
During Term One you’ll develop a thorough understanding of why clinical trials have become so important in the evaluation of healthcare, social care and public health interventions. You’ll gain an understanding of the various types of outcomes commonly collected in contemporary clinical trials and will explore the procedural and logistical considerations when setting up a trial.
You’ll gain an in-depth knowledge of the processes, regulations and strategies required for the successful delivery and management of clinical trials. The different phases of medical trials and their vital purpose towards adoption of new medical treatments will be explored. You’ll be introduced to advanced trial designs and when and where they are applicable and will be equipped with the skills to understand the principles and correct interpretation of analyses, and appropriate presentation of results incorporating real-trial data.
The culmination of knowledge and skills obtained during Terms One and Two of the MSc in Clinical Trials will be applied in this Final Research Project. You’ll design a research project demonstrating independent research skills with consideration of any ethical requirements. This will include a review and critical analysis of previous work in the area and the selection of appropriate methodology.
