As genomics becomes embedded within mainstream NHS care, it's important for healthcare professionals and research scientists like you to understand its relevance. Learn how genomics is increasingly being used to inform the diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with cancer, inherited genetic disorders and infectious diseases.
This is a rapidly developing field, and I believe the future of curing many diseases including cancer will use personalised medicine as the mainstream therapy. By continuing to research the genetics of many diseases, genomic medicine will change how the world works by developing new and effective medicine.
Course Structure The programme offers full-time and part-time studies with Postgraduate Masters, Diploma and Certificate options. While the exact content may change, here’s what you can expect to study each term based on a full time Masters course.
In term one, you'll focus on the basic concepts of human genomics, the technologies for generating genome-wide data and the bioinformatic tools that are required for its analysis. Using real life case studies, you'll learn how to interrogate genomic data to identify and investigate the pathogenicity of genetic variants.
In term two, you'll learn how to apply genomic approaches to the clinical management of patients, including diagnosis, stratification and treatment selection in areas such as cancer and inherited conditions.
In term three, you'll undertake a research project on an area related to genomic medicine.
