A flexible programme structure with a choice of pathways

This Linguistics and English Language MA offers a flexible, interdisciplinary structure. You can choose from a wide range of modules from the School of English Language, Literature and Linguistics, and where appropriate, modules from other subject areas across the University. It includes two specialist taught pathways, enabling you to focus on areas that best match your academic interests and career goals.

You may develop expertise in one of the following specialist pathways, depending on your academic interests:

  • English Language
  • Language Acquisition

The pathways allow you to focus on your area of particular interest. You may explore topics such as:

  • phonetics and phonology
  • syntax, semantics and pragmatics
  • sociolinguistics
  • psycholinguistics
  • child language acquisition
  • second language acquisition
  • lexical innovation
  • historical linguistics

This programme is ideal for students who wish to develop advanced theoretical knowledge, strong analytical skills and hands-on research experience in linguistics and English language studies.
