The Ophthalmology MSc at UCL provides an in-depth exploration of ophthalmology within a contemporary clinical and research-focused context. The course provides a comprehensive grounding in the core principles, approaches and methodologies that underpin current practice across key clinical subspecialties in this rapidly evolving field. It is designed to develop your theoretical understanding and contextual knowledge, enabling you to strengthen clinical decision-making, particularly within subspecialty areas, and to plan coherent next steps and specialist training, research and patient-facing practice.
The close relationship between UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and the world-leading Moorfields Eye Hospital underpins all aspects of the Ophthalmology MSc course. This collaboration ensures that your learning is firmly embedded in the latest advances in research, diagnostics and treatment in ophthalmology. Teaching is delivered by a combination of highly experienced clinicians and internationally recognised research-active faculty. A strong emphasis is placed on critical thinking in both clinical problem-solving and research, equipping you with the skills required to advance your career in ophthalmology or related fields. During the course, students have the opportunity to observe a clinical and surgical session at Moorfields Eye Hospital, providing valuable insight into real-world practice.
This course aims to equip graduates with a comprehensive understanding of ophthalmology and its developing specialist pathways, enabling informed decisions about further clinical training and research careers.
Graduates will develop the ability to plan and direct their ongoing learning within both academic and clinical contexts. They will gain a strong foundation in the diagnosis and management of common and complex ophthalmic conditions, with knowledge applicable across a range of healthcare settings in the UK and internationally. The course fosters the ability to synthesise and critically evaluate clinical information, principles and practices – key skills for those intending to pursue specialist ophthalmology training.
In addition, the Ophthalmology MSc develops advanced skills in the appraisal and synthesis of clinical evidence and academic literature, providing a strong foundation for careers in research as well as clinical practice.
Graduates have typically gone on to further ophthalmic study, training and research, both in the UK and overseas, in both academic and clinical contexts. 100% of all graduates were either in full-time work or study within 15 months of completing their studies (Graduate Outcomes Survey carried out by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), looking at the destinations of graduates in the 2023/24 cohort).
