In a world increasingly defined by data, knowing which questions to ask and how to find robust answers is an essential skill.
On the Social Research Methods with Data Science MSc, you’ll develop advanced methodological skills including cutting-edge computational and quantitative approaches, from web scraping, machine learning, and neural networks to complex and large-scale data management and analysis, and more.
You’ll learn to apply these technological approaches to pressing social research questions, exploring a varied range of topics, such as how populations become segregated in different cities, evaluating interventions in children’s social care, or the impact of economic inequality on long-term health and financial insecurity.

You’ll develop in-demand expertise in advanced quantitative research methods, with opportunities to broaden your training through optional modules such as impact evaluation, longitudinal data analysis or ethnography.
You’ll learn to critically assess the strengths and limitations of different types of data, enabling you to work confidently with diverse data sources across a range of social research and policy contexts using theoretically informed and ethically sound approaches.
These capabilities will help you go beyond the numbers, becoming a thoughtful and responsible data practitioner who can generate meaningful insights for research, policy and practice.
Graduates from this Master’s course pursue successful careers across a wide range of organisations, roles and sectors, with more than 80% progressing to highly-skilled employment or postgraduate-level study after graduation. These include careers in policy and government, think tanks, banking and investment, market research, publishing and journalism, and advertising.
