Bringing together the relevant theory with extensive project-based experience, this this Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accredited course covers diverse topics in geospatial sciences from terrestrial, marine, space-based, and airborne techniques for spatial data acquisition to the principles of coordinate reference systems, data representation, and digital spatial data manipulation. In addition to excellent teaching and insights into current research and theory, you’ll gain practical skills in IT packages, programming languages, and specialist software tools like ArcGIS Pro, MicroSurvey STAR*NET, Leica Infinity, PhotoScan, FME, Revit, and PostGIS.
You’ll also gain transferable skills like communication, project management and critical thinking which, when coupled with your technical expertise, will make you highly sought after for jobs in industry, commerce, government and non-governmental bodies
This course is most likely to appeal to students who have an academic background in a subject such as engineering, architecture, environmental studies, geography, mathematics, earth sciences, physical or computational sciences and wish to expand their knowledge of theory, tools and techniques for working with geospatial data, from acquisition to processing to analysis. We also encourage applications from those with relevant professional experience in the geospatial sciences.
Our course offers a combination of theory, practice, and innovation that will give you the strong technical and contextual foundation you need to progress into a geospatial science career in either industry or research.
Students graduating with a degree in Geospatial Sciences will be equipped for a diverse range of roles, including GIS/BIM professional or officer, data scientist, geospatial software developer, and consultant. Our students establish strong links with industry through the industrial seminar series and industrial research projects.
Graduates unlock multiple pathways due to their comprehensive and transferable skill set, in-depth expertise in the subject matter, and broad contextual knowledge. Our graduates either prepare to pursue further studies at a PhD level or find work as geospatial specialists and consultants across a wide range of sectors, industries, and organisations ( Graduate Outcomes survey carried out by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), looking at the destinations of graduates in the 2018–2024 cohorts ).
