A minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline or overseas qualification of equivalent standard is required. Relevant disciplines include oceanography, marine studies, geography, engineering, geology, mathematics, physics, computer science, environmental science, forestry. Other degrees will be considered if they have a significant quantitative component. Relevant work experience will also be considered.

The Remote Sensing and Environmental Mapping MSc provides an in-depth understanding of how satellite, airborne, drone and ground-based remote sensing technologies are used to observe, analyse and model environmental processes at local, regional and global scales. Combining core scientific principles with training in the latest geospatial tools and techniques, this course equips you with advanced skills in environmental mapping, data analysis and geospatial coding, including the application of artificial intelligence and deep learning methods.
With a strong emphasis on practical learning, you will gain hands-on experience working with real-world datasets and develop the confidence to address complex environmental challenges using remote sensing in both research and applied settings. The course also develops your analytical, problem-solving and communication skills, preparing you for leadership roles across academia, government agencies, environmental consultancies and industry.
This course is suitable for graduates who want to develop specialist skills in remote sensing, environmental mapping and geospatial data analysis.

This course provides a strong foundation in remote sensing, environmental mapping and spatial data analysis, drawing on over 40 years of interdisciplinary expertise and real-world applications.
You will gain advanced technical and analytical capabilities, including:
acquisition, processing and interpretation of environmental data

coding for spatial data science, particularly using Python, deep learning and AI

In addition, the course develops transferable skills valued by employers and research institutions, including effective communication through reports, presentations and posters, as well as independent research and critical thinking.
Graduates of the Remote Sensing and Environmental Mapping MSc are highly employable across a range of sectors that require advanced technical and spatial analysis skills. 95% of graduates were in highly skilled work or postgraduate study 15 months after graduation. Graduate Outcomes survey carried out by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), looking at the destinations of graduates in the 2018–2024 cohorts.
