The Knowledge, Information and Data Science MSc, offered by UCL’s Department of Information Studies (DIS), enables graduates with computational and mathematical strengths to specialise in modern, AI-driven approaches to information science, data science and knowledge engineering. The course integrates current industry practice with cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence, preparing graduates for diverse careers across the information and technology sectors.
We take the view that knowledge of foundational principles, and the ability to independently analyse, apply and adapt technologies to novel problem domains, are critical to today’s academics and professionals. As such, we teach topics in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science and statistics, logic and knowledge representation, information retrieval, language modelling and generative AI, natural language processing, database technologies and information governance. Throughout the course we develop computational and programming skills, alongside engagement with contemporary research.
The course is particularly suitable for computationally and mathematically equipped graduates wishing to pursue an in-depth study of modern, AI-driven approaches to knowledge, information and data science. Typically, graduates will have the ambition to enter information technology and artificial intelligence-related industries or to continue into academic research in these areas.
This course will equip you with the technical, theoretical and research skills to adapt to our rapidly changing information-based society, and also challenge them to think deeply about the impact of artificial intelligence and related technologies on individuals, society and industry. Specific skills acquired include generative AI for information processing, developing machine learning solutions, data engineering and analysis, knowledge engineering, data modelling, knowledge representation, database design, management and implementation, and ontology and linked data design. The course will prepare you for technical and management roles in the information technology and artificial intelligence industries, as well as for research careers in academia.
We aim to prepare graduates for careers in a wide variety of roles, such as AI development, information systems management, business analytics, information architecture, knowledge-based systems, information security and governance, e-commerce, finance and fintech, data analytics and data science. Recent graduates have gone on from KIDS to work in these industry roles, while others have gone on to further study.
Department of Information Studies taught Master’s graduates have gone on to work in a range of industries including publishing, journalism, or translation (21.6%), academic research and higher education (13.3%), arts admin; libraries, museums and heritage (10.6%) and IT, technology and telecomms (5.3%).
