The MSc Psychology of Public Communication examines how communication works, why it sometimes fails, and what we can do about it. Based in the Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science, the programme treats communication as a social and cognitive process: how people reason and argue, how they tell and interpret stories, how meaning is negotiated in conversation, and how messages persuade, mislead, or fall flat can all be better understood using the theories and tools of psychological and behavioural sciences.
What sets the programme apart is its disciplinary focus. Where many communication degrees sit within media or cultural studies, or train students for a single profession, the MSc in Psychology of Public Communication approaches communication through the lens of psychology and behavioural science to consider how communication impacts pressing questions in public life. This includes questions such as: why does misinformation spread and how it can be resisted? What drives political polarisation and is it different online and offline? What enables health and science campaigns to succeed or backfire? And how can, and do, organisations, brands, and governments shape public debates and opinions?
The MSc suits graduates from psychology, the social sciences and the humanities, as well as professionals working in or moving towards communication fields. Based in the heart of London, the programme develops knowledge and skills relevant to careers in areas such as political and public affairs, campaigning and advocacy, public health and science communication, marketing and public relations, policy and communications research. It also provides a strong foundation for doctoral study.
Please note that until 2026/27 this programme was called MSc Social and Public Communication.
The programme is recognised by the professional certification of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations in the UK.
