Our graduate students further their education in chemistry, author original publications, present their work at scientific conferences, and mentor undergraduate researchers. Graduate courses are generally small, with individual attention for each student. Furthermore, our graduate students gain valuable experience as teaching assistants in undergraduate laboratory classes. Our graduates are exceptionally well prepared to enter careers in industry, doctoral programs, or medical school. Chemistry laboratory facilities include stockrooms, a reading room, a glass-blowing shop, shared instrumentation laboratories for multi-nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray diffraction, chromatography, spectroscopy (uv/visible, fluorescence, and atomic absorption), mass spectrometry, thermal analysis, and polymer characterization. Faculty and students often collaborate with other W&M departments, the Virginia Institute for Marine Science, the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, and institutions throughout the United States. These facilities and relationships support research in cutting-edge chemistry research.
