In this two-year programme, you will explore the dynamics of global processes of change and development in a critical and reflexive manner. You will learn to acknowledge dilemmas and complexities that are inherently part of development theories and policies and search for ways to incorporate this knowledge in proposing effective solutions and meaningful change.

You select one of the following specialisations in consultation and agreement with your study adviser. Your specialisation depends on your academic background, and interest. For a more detailed information on the programme structure please refer to the study handbook .

If you have a BSc or BA in the social sciences, you can choose one of the following:

  • Sociology of Development In this specialisation, you develop the analytical and methodological skills to critically unpack development ideas, practices, and imaginaries. This specialisation offers a great preparation for an engaged professional life in international and domestic arenas. You will dive into social and spatial drivers and implications of agrarian, climate, and social change. You will also compare mainstream ideas and strategies for development with alternatives, including convivial conservation, local forms of peace-building, activism and resistance, citizen’s initiatives in sustainability, degrowth, and diverse agri-food networks. In this specialisation, you have the option to choose courses from the sub-track Disaster and Conflict Studies.
