The Department of Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) was established at the University of Toronto in 1958 with the creation of a two-year postgraduate diploma program, the first English-speaking program in Canada. The Master of Health Science (MHSc) program was established in 1978 and is a full-time professional graduate program. Academic and clinical faculty provide innovative teaching and learning opportunities for students in a unique integrated curriculum.
Speech-language pathologists are skilled healthcare professionals who specialize in diagnosing and treating a variety of speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders. They work with individuals across the lifespan, addressing conditions such as aphasia, dysphasia, stuttering, voice disorders, autism spectrum disorder, cognitive-communication impairments, and neurological conditions. The SLP curriculum at the University of Toronto is designed to equip students with the foundational knowledge, clinical expertise, and interdisciplinary skills required for success in this dynamic field.
