You’ll learn essential skills in computer programming, artificial intelligence, statistics and computational biology. If you have a biological sciences or computer science background, this course will prepare you to contribute to one of the fastest-growing fields in industry and academia.

During the course, you’ll gain a solid foundation in bioinformatics and learn to apply machine learning to biological data. This is crucial for innovations such as predicting disease outcomes, protein structure modelling and understanding genetic disorders.

You’ll study core modules in genomics, bioinformatics, coding (such as Python and R) and data analysis. There are also advanced options in machine learning, image analysis, network biology, health or ecology and evolution.

You’ll engage with real datasets, modern tools and research-driven teaching. Through coursework and applied projects, you’ll learn to:

• develop and use bioinformatics tools and pipelines
• work with next-generation sequencing (NGS) data
• use High-Performance Computing (HPC)
• use AI to address biological challenges
• visualise and interpret complex biological datasets
• design experiments, test hypotheses and effectively communicate your research.

Sussex has a strong interdisciplinary tradition. We’ll support your development with teaching delivered by experts in our Faculty of Science, Engineering and Medicine. You’ll also benefit from the combined knowledge of academics from two of our Centres of Excellence – Sussex AI and the Genome Damage and Stability Centre.
