The MSc Civil Engineering is designed to address the industry's demand for a new generation of engineers trained in carbon-efficient, climate-resilient infrastructure and sustainable resource management.
All MSc students will complete core modules dedicated to net zero and sustainable development. This directly responds to the Institution of Civil Engineers’ State of the Nation: Infrastructure in 2024 report, which emphasises the need to address these specific global challenges.
Every student has the chance to build strong professional connections through our industry-led Civil Engineering Group Design Project, which allows you to work on real projects, benefiting from continuous feedback from an industry mentor (see below a collection of recent Industry-led Group Design Projects).
The program is further supported by expert guest lectures. If you select one of the Sustainable pathways, your industry collaboration deepens to include an Independent Study with Industry and an MSc dissertation co-supervised by industry professionals (subject to successful application). See below a list of recent MSc dissertations co-supervised by Industry.
As the demands on our built environment rapidly evolve due to the climate and environment emergencies, our MSc in Civil Engineering equips you to tackle these complex and intertwined challenges. The program is designed to train a new generation of engineers in carbon-efficient and climate-resilient infrastructure, as well as the sustainable management of natural resources. Bridging the gap between academic theory and practical application through robust industrial engagement, this course provides the specialist and generic skills necessary to lead future developments. Ultimately, the curriculum is designed to meet the needs of a broad range of civil engineering industries.
This degree is accredited by the:
Academic requirements Normally, a first or upper second-class Honours degree from a UK university (or equivalent overseas qualification) in any civil engineering discipline. Applicants with a degree in environmental engineering, maths, physics and mechanical engineering may also be considered. Lower degree classifications might be considered if there is strength elsewhere (for example, relevant work experience, excellent final project/dissertation, very strong academic letter of reference, very strong application statement linking with career goals). Don’t meet the academic entry requirements? We offer the Pre-Masters Preparation Course at the University of Strathclyde International Study Centre, for international students (non-UK/Ireland). English language requirements If English is not your first language, please visit our English language requirements page for full details of the requirements in place before making your application.
