Southampton’s MA Creative Writing will enable you to develop your writing craft and provide you with the knowledge of the publishing industry you need to share your writing with the world.
We welcome students who have studied a BA in English or Creative Writing and want to focus on developing a sustained project, and those who may not have studied creative writing at university but wish to pursue their writing in a supportive educational environment.
Taught through a combination of creative writing workshops and modules providing the professional skills you need to sustain a career as writer, this MA will expand your artistic practice and enable you to develop your work in new directions.
As well as developing your own projects in writing workshops, you can study modules on topics such as:
You will be taught by practicing writers with decades of experience in publishing novels, memoirs, and popular histories: Toby Litt , Carole Burns , Kevin Brazil , and Devorah Baum .
Southampton is a Russell Group University, and the English Department was ranked 8th in the 2021 REF. This means you will be developing your writing in an internationally diverse community of students and writers with a rich programme of visiting speakers and industry events throughout the year.
Our ‘Writers in Conversation’ series brings writers such as Denise Riley, Mary-Jean Chan, Jennifer Egan, Gish Jen, and Xialou Gou to meet students on campus. And we host regular visits from publishing industry professionals working in publishers like Granta Books, Penguin Random House, and Harper Collins.
You will also be able to benefit from Southampton’s outstanding arts environment, which includes the Turner Sims Concert Hall and the John Hansard Gallery.
