Our MA Contemporary Curating course equips you with the knowledge and practical skills that you need to work as a curator in different contexts.
Curating is a critical, social and artistic exercise, going beyond exhibition-making to encompass other ways of working alongside cultural projects and public programmes. This contemporary curating master's will give you the guidance and encouragement to create your own curatorial profile, by developing your interests and connecting them with existing debates and practices.
Our contemporary curating course is one of the few curating MAs hosted within a large, research-intensive, Russell Group university. You'll have the opportunity to work alongside students and experts in related disciplines, building a network of staff and peers who will inform and inspire your curatorial practice.
You'll also benefit from our partnerships with galleries, as well as a rich offering of extra-curricular activities and public programmes which expand well beyond your discipline. Our contemporary curating students graduate prepared for careers in galleries, museums and cultural organisations, or to develop an independent curatorial practice.

By studying for a master's in curatorial studies, you’ll gain practical experience to help you conceive and develop exhibitions, public programmes, public art commissions and other curatorial assignments.
You'll learn how to design a curatorial research project, either on your own or with others, and ensure your curatorial outputs respond to questions being asked today. You'll understand contemporary curating as an expanded practice – engaging in the transdisciplinary debates that have shaped its history, and speculating on its future.
During MA Contemporary Curating, you'll also:
become familiar with curatorial histories and debates
question the Western-centric legacy of curatorial studies, and propose ways of working beyond it
understand the significance of and apply inclusive, ethical and sustainable curatorial practices
engage with the techno-social implications of digital and AI curating
learn how the online world is reshaping subjectiveness, curatorial practices and viewing habits
develop critical skills in project managing, evaluation, fundraising and communication
Throughout your curating master's, you'll visit studios within the Department of Art and Media Technology and beyond, listen to practitioners talk about their work, engage in dialogues and explore avenues for collaboration. You'll also visit exhibitions across the UK, benefitting from curators’ talks and learning to reflect critically on current curatorial practice.
MA Contemporary Curating programme is studied over one year, full-time, and comprises a mix of core, compulsory and optional modules.

You’ll need a 2.2 degree in arts, design, humanities, curating, art history, exhibition design, management, philosophy, communication, social sciences, marketing, psychology or a related subject.
