## Course summary What happens when human rights cross borders? Who is responsible when international obligations are breached? And how can law respond when global challenges outgrow national legal systems? If you want to examine how international law shapes rights, responsibilities and global disputes, LLM International Law and Human Rights at Southampton gives you the specialist knowledge and practical legal skills to take that interest further. You'll explore the effects of globalisation on law and human rights, developing a thorough understanding of international conventions, state responsibility, international dispute settlement and human rights obligations. Your first week begins with an intensive legal skills course. You'll explore the common law system, the relationship between legislation and judge-made law, and the influence of international conventions and model laws on national legal systems. From there, you can shape your studies through areas including international dispute settlement, human rights, international criminal justice, armed conflict, and free speech and privacy online. Your learning is informed by Southampton's research and work in legal reform and development, helping you engage with contemporary challenges and consider how law and policy can respond. You'll also develop through practical activities including debates, presentations, simulated court hearings, clause drafting and public consultation responses.
