The Statistics, Measurement, Assessment, and Research Technology, M.S.Ed. (SMART) program provides students with advanced statistical and research skills to drive informed decision-making and shape contemporary policy through rigorous data analysis and effective research strategies. Students master data processing using statistical software like SAS and effectively manage complex datasets. The curriculum emphasizes evaluating policies, programs, and interventions across diverse sectors, including education, social services, and criminal justice, both domestically and internationally.
Students develop expertise in survey methods, sampling design, privacy considerations, and data collection strategies. Comprehensive training in measurement and assessment covers theoretical and practical approaches to test construction, validity, reliability, and fairness. The program also includes rigorous study of experimental design, regression analysis, and analysis of variance.
Graduates are well-prepared to shape informed educational and social policy decisions, leveraging foundational and advanced statistical, psychometric, and research methodologies to address contemporary policy challenges and opportunities.
The 10-course unit minimum makes it possible to complete all degree requirements within one academic year or one academic year plus one summer session of full-time study. In addition to coursework and a written general examination, students in this degree program are strongly encouraged to undertake a research apprenticeship.
