Modern finance relies heavily on mathematical modelling to manage investment portfolios, financial planning, pricing of financial products and analysing business risk. The Master of Financial Mathematics was introduced in 2007 to provide the financial sector (banks, insurance companies, investment companies) with a stream of highly trained specialists in quantitative finance. This program is suitable for students with an aptitude for mathematics and a keen interest in finance, who are looking for a pathway into the financial industry.

For entry into this degree, students must have:

  • A recognised bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification): With a major in a cognate discipline area; and
  • An overall average of 65 or higher: As determined by the UNSW Postgraduate Coursework Entry Calculator ; or
  • An average of 65 or higher in at least 4 courses: In mathematics or statistics at the second-year undergraduate level or above, as determined by the UNSW Postgraduate Coursework Entry Calculator
  • Assumed knowledge: Several variable calculus, linear algebra, probability and theory of statistics (applies to both admission pathways)
  • Recommended knowledge: Real analysis or measure theory, partial differential equations and linear regression
