If English is not your first language, we require IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum component score of 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in all other components.
If you do not meet our IELTS requirements then you may be able to complete a pre-sessional English pathway that enables you to start your course without retaking IELTS.
The University uses academic selection criteria to determine an applicant’s ability to successfully complete a course at the University of Essex. Where appropriate, we may ask for specific information relating to previous modules studied or work experience.
Study the nuts and bolts of language: sound systems, word structure, sentence structure, and how meaning is conveyed. You’ll explore the different theories proposed to explain human linguistic ability, discovering what human languages share and where they differ.
This course provides a formal and empirical grounding in the core areas of linguistics while encouraging you to evaluate the major theoretical approaches that shape the discipline. You'll develop a deep understanding of language structure, meaning, and communication through the study of real-world linguistic data.
Our optional modules allow you to broaden your expertise into related fields such as applied linguistics, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics, helping you tailor your degree to your interests and career ambitions.
