A comprehensive understanding of the science underpinning dance is a must for virtually all dance practitioners.
This innovative programme offers just that, giving you the scientific theory and specialist skills that will inspire you to push the frontiers of dance and dance education.
Through an applied and multi-disciplinary blend of theory and practice, you will:
explore the biopsychosocial and developmental theory that relate to dance education and training
develop an awareness of changing trends in dance science and education
learn and apply various research methods to dance
As you study the science relevant to dance performance and education, you will have access to resources at:
Dance Research Scotland ( DaReS )
Institute for Sport, Physical Education and Health Sciences
Human Performance Science research group
This Masters programme is offered full-time, with some compulsory courses taught in intensive blocks.
MSc Dance Science and Education students have opportunities to apply theory to practice through additional projects .
Our students performed pieces choreographed by Madeline Squire, our current Artist in Residence. Madeline joined us after her role as First Artist with Scottish Ballet.

Our facilities include dance studios and CASES-accredited scientific research laboratories.
You will have opportunities to apply pedagogical theory to practice in the community, including dance studios and primary schools.
You will have access to extensive archives and numerous resources in the fields of dance and medical practice in the University's libraries.

We may also consider your application if you have relevant employment or professional experience; please contact us to check before you apply.
With your application, you will be required to submit a digital portfolio (maximum 15 minutes in length) evidencing your professional dance practice. This could include, for example, footage of your own performance, your own original choreography performed by your students/dancers, and/or you in a teaching context.
