Edinburgh's long-established expertise in core computer science is recognised internationally and spans the range from computer architecture to theoretical computer science.
This master's degree offers you the opportunity to obtain specialist knowledge in the design, analysis, implementation, and use of computer systems ranging from the components of a single processor to computer networks as vast as the Internet.
You can also pursue a more theoretical direction by choosing courses in areas, such as:
The programme provides a solid foundation in theoretical understanding and a wide variety of practical techniques applicable in many career settings.
The University of Edinburgh consistently ranks among the world's top universities for Computer Science, including 22nd in the world and 5th in the UK in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026.
The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 ranked our School 1st in the UK for research power in Computer Science and Informatics. This means you will learn from experts at the forefront of their fields, undertaking cutting-edge research in a wide range of areas.
You will be part of a large, vibrant department with around 2000 students across undergraduate, masters and research programmes and 150 academic staff.
You will study in the heart of Edinburgh city centre, regularly voted as one of the most desirable places to live in the world, and one of the UK’s fastest-growing tech hubs.

A UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent, in informatics, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, computer science, econometrics, electrical engineering, linguistics, mathematics, philosophy, physics or psychology.
Competence in programming is essential. During your degree you must have completed a programming course in at least one of the following: C/C++, Java, Python, R, Matlab, Haskell, Julia.
During your degree you must have completed the equivalent of 60 SCQF credits or 30 ECTS credits of mathematics that have typically covered the following subjects/topics: calculus (differentiation and integration), linear algebra (vectors and multi-dimensional matrices), discrete mathematics and mathematical reasoning (e.g. induction and reasoning, graph theoretic models, proofs), and probability and statistics (concepts in discrete and continuous probabilities, basic parameter estimation). Prior knowledge of probability and statistics concepts is especially important for this degree.
