The MPhil is a full-time course offered by the Faculty of Education. It introduces students to research skills and specialist knowledge that explores how education is shaped by power, politics, and contested forms of knowledge. Recognising that education takes a wide variety of forms and is subject to different, often competing agendas across the globe, this MPhil in Knowledge, Power and Politics explores fundamental questions relating to: the roles of education in societies; transnational debates about the nature of knowledge formation and its circulation; and the consequences for social justice.
The main educational aims are:
to examine the theoretical frameworks used in the study of education and its constituent disciplines;
provide training in research methods appropriate to education;
advance students’ capacity for professional reflection and judgment;
cater for a range of specialists interested within the field of education or one of its constituent disciplines.

The course is composed of two key elements:
the research methods training course, and
the "Knowledge, Power and Politics" thematic route
Teaching time is split between the two elements, research methods and subject-specific content with a total of 72 hours teaching. The course is taught through a mixture of lectures, smaller group seminars and supervisions.
Throughout the programme, students will submit work and receive feedback. Informally, feedback is also provided through supervisions. At the end of each term, supervisors write an online report, which can be viewed by the student via the Postgraduate Feedback and Reporting System.
The dissertation is up to 15,000 words in length and submitted in June.
The examination shall include an oral examination on the dissertation and the assessments and on the general field of knowledge within which they fall, save that the Examiners may, at their discretion, waive the requirement for an oral examination.
Assessment will be through a range of formats which may include coursework, written and oral examinations, posters, presentations and projects.
