The MPhil in Economics is a one-year master’s degree that runs from early September to late June. This degree is specifically aimed at candidates who are interested in undertaking a master’s degree that will give them the technical training required to undertake a career as a professional economist working for, say, the UK Government Economic Service, or an economics consultancy.
Students are strongly encouraged to attend the online preparatory course in Mathematics and Statistics in September.
Each student will take 7 modules. All modules (except Econometric Methods) have 18 hours of lectures. The module on Econometric Methods has 27 hours of lectures.
Requirements:
Compulsory modules in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics and four optional modules.
There is a test on the material covered in the preparatory course which is marked on a pass/fail basis. The test is formative and does not contribute to the overall mark for the MPhil, but failing this preparatory course will indicate that a student will need to improve their mathematical and statistical skills to cope with the main part of the course.
There are opportunities to practice exams and view solutions from past papers which will be available on our virtual learning environment.
Classes in problem sets take place for core modules.
There is no thesis for this Course.
Assessment will be through a range of formats which may include coursework, written and oral examinations, in-class tests, posters, presentations and projects .
Applicants for this course should have achieved a High II.i Honours Degree .
If your degree is not from the UK, please check International Qualifications to find the equivalent in your country.
Please read the Faculty's Entry Requirements and How to Apply pages before applying for this course.
The Faculty of Economics has high academic requirements and a large number of applicants that meet them. Applicants should have attained or expect to attain a high upper second-class undergraduate (or international equivalent) qualification in Economics. The degree should include standard courses in intermediate level Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics (a Business Studies, Accountancy or Management degree or qualification does not provide an adequate background). If you do not meet the criteria listed below, it is unlikely you will be offered a place.
Applicants whose previous university training has been in countries outside the UK or part of the University of London International Programme MUST submit the results of a recent GRE test. Please note that failure to upload a GRE Test (if required) may result in the automatic withdrawal of the application. For more information, please see the Faculty's website here or contact us via email.
In addition, applicants are strongly encouraged to include supporting information of their ranking within each academic year.
