Ranked 7th globally in the Times Higher Education subject rankings for research quality in medical and health subjects ( THE 2026).
Epidemiology is the study of disease and health outcomes in populations. It is about finding causes - the reasons why some people become ill, and the reasons why some populations are healthier than others - and what we can do to remove or control these causes. It is the science underpinning public health, clinical research and healthcare evaluation. The MSc in Epidemiology will enable you to engage with the complex population health challenges facing the global community in future decades, providing high-quality training in epidemiological methods that are applicable to low, middle and high income settings. The programme is suitable for students from both clinical and non-clinical backgrounds.
The MSc will introduce the principles of modern epidemiology and its role in public health and other health-related disciplines. You will learn how to design and analyse experimental and observational studies covering aetiology, interventions, diagnosis and prognosis. There will be opportunities to learn about cutting-edge methods in causal inference and molecular epidemiology.
Teaching methods include lectures, practicals, group work, asynchronous materials, workshops and seminars. Teaching occurs across two teaching blocks, each containing ten weeks of teaching, a consolidation week and time for preparing and undertaking assessments. In the second teaching block, you will have the opportunity to choose one of three optional units focusing on molecular epidemiology, epidemic data analysis and modelling, and health protection. Following these two teaching blocks, the dissertation unit, where you will undertake a research project of your choice, occurs over the summer. These choices, alongside foundational skills you will develop throughout the MSc in Epidemiology, will enable you to tailor your learning experience and knowledge in areas in which you may wish to build in your future career. The programme will introduce you to the statistical package R for data handling, manipulation and analysis. We also offer the opportunity to engage with a series of workshops on critical and responsible usage of artificial intelligence (AI), facilitating skills development in critical AI literacy for their academic studies and their futures.

You will typically need an upper second-class honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant subject, such as (but not limited to): medicine, veterinary science, dentistry, biology/biological/human/biomedical sciences, physiology, anthropology, sociology, pharmacy, pharmacology, nursing, epidemiology, public health, global health, environmental health, geography, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology, mathematics, statistics and data science.
If your degree subject is not listed above, you will need an upper second-class honours degree or an international equivalent, and you will also need to demonstrate evidence of your numeracy skills through either:
If you are currently completing a degree, we understand that your final grade may be higher than the interim grades or module/unit grades you have achieved during your studies to date. We will consider your application if your interim grades are currently slightly lower than the programme's entry requirements and may make you an aspirational offer. This offer would be at the standard level, so you would need to achieve the standard entry requirements by the end of your degree. Specific module requirements would still apply.
We will also consider your application if your final overall achieved grade is slightly lower than the programme's entry requirement. If your achieved grade is lower than our entry requirements, your application may be more likely to receive an offer if you have additional relevant work experience or qualifications. If you have at least one of the following, please include your CV (curriculum vitae / résumé) when you apply, showing:
