You will take units that provide core training, such as Research Skills for Musicians, and build your familiarity with the 'state of the art' in Readings and Repertoires. Both include teaching and coursework specific to each pathway, at the same time giving you the opportunity to build cross-disciplinary perspectives.
You also take specialised units designed for your pathway, and choose from a menu of optional units tailored to your interests. These are followed by a major project: a dissertation or edition for musicologists (including those on the Russian Music and Medieval Music pathways); a recital for performers; a portfolio of new works for composers.
There are three core units: Research Skills for Musicians, and Readings and Repertoires 1 and 2 (taught in semesters 1 and 2). There are a number of other core and optional units depending which of the five pathways you are following. The content especially of the pathway-specific and optional units in this MA programme relates closely to the research interests of the academic staff, giving you essential training in your chosen area.
Visit our programme catalogue for full details of the structure and unit content for our MA in Music.
You will typically need a strong second-class honours degree (55% or higher) or an international equivalent in Music.
Applicants for the Composition or Performance pathways are required to submit a portfolio of work. For further information on the required portfolio, please see the Department of Music website .
Applicants for the Musicology Pathway will need to ensure that they submit a personal statement which addresses the following areas:
Musicology involves not only knowledge of music history but also engagement with current scholarly debates and research.
We will consider your application if your interim grades are currently slightly lower than the programme's entry requirements and may make you an aspirational offer. This offer would be at the standard level, so you would need to achieve the standard entry requirements by the end of your degree.
We will also consider your application if your final overall achieved grade is slightly lower than the programme's entry requirement.
If your achieved grade is lower than our entry requirements, your application may be more likely to receive an offer if you have additional qualifications. If you have the following, please include your CV (curriculum vitae / résumé) when you apply, showing details of your relevant qualifications:
See international equivalent qualifications on the International Office website.
Read the programme admissions statement for important information on entry requirements, the application process and supporting documents required.
