Bel: My name is Bel and I'm studying MSc Statistics at the University of Birmingham.
I chose to study at Birmingham because I visited an Open Day and, even though it was pouring it down the whole day, the staff, the students, everyone was just so lovely and warm and welcoming, and I decided I wanted to be here for my Master's degree.
We use quite a bit of RStudio.
It's a programming language designed for statistics.
We do a lot of statistical modelling and classification in there.
For someone with no experience, there are designated workshops for you to build up those skills at the beginning of term.
In our guided study sessions, you will have a problem sheet, and you'll sit there and try and solve questions.
The lecturer will be there, sometimes there'll be PGTAs there to help you out with it.
We had some people from the finance industry come in doing a talk about their company and what it does and proposing some MSc dissertation ideas.
The idea being that if you pick that topic, you work with those people in industry.
Some of my favourite aspects of the course have been the really applied modules, things like Time Series, Statistical Machine Learning, and Statistical Modelling.
I find it really interesting to see how all the theory that I've learned can be applied into a real tangible thing.
Overall, the Statistics course here is great and I think it will be a really big help in my future.
