Ranked 15th in the UK (Complete University Guide), you'll graduate with the confidence and skills to register as a nurse within the Nursing and Midwifery Council in Adult or Mental Health Nursing in two years.
This course will run in three parts over two years. While the exact content may change, here’s what you can expect to study each year.
There are two modules in Part 1 of the course, that will give you a foundation in nursing practice and begin to develop your clinical skills. You'll undertake both a formative and a summative placement, in your chosen field.
In year two you'll be introduced to research methods and continue to develop your clinical nursing skills. You'll have both a formative and a summative placement, in your chosen field. The first clinical placement of the year will be in your alternate field, and the other two will be in your chosen field. You'll have the opportunity to express a preference for where you go in your final placement.

To gain a place at Birmingham you will need to meet our general entry requirements, as well as those specific to your course. Your application will be reviewed by the course’s Admissions Tutor, who will decide whether your application should be shortlisted for interview.
You must also hold GCSEs in English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above (or recognised equivalents).
The MSc Nursing (adult or mental health field) has been designed as a two-year taught programme. If you are successful at interview, you'll need to submit a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your prior learning (Recognition of Prior Learning Portfolio). The portfolio provides evidence of prior graduate learning and care experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, values and caring behaviours equivalent to year one of an undergraduate nursing programme.
Within the portfolio, you will need to evidence at least 500 hours of experience in health/ social care verified by a registrant - this is someone who appears on a public professional register, such as a Doctor, Nurse, Social worker etc. Registered Managers are not suitable to verify hours.
To help you complete your portfolio, we provide a template, supporting materials and run tutorial sessions led by our professors.
