Madison: I'm Madison and I'm studying AI and Machine Learning at Birmingham.
I chose to study at Birmingham due to the fact that it's one of the leading universities in research for artificial intelligence, computer vision and medical AI.
There is also so much else here to do at the university.
So, there's so many different societies, clubs, even within the department itself.
There are so many, like the CS society which I'm part of, as well as being a student representative for your course which you can get involved in which I think is amazing.
My favourite aspect of this course is the more maths focus of the course itself.
Because coming from an undergrad - in computer science as well - that was more focused on the theory rather than the maths side.
Foundational Maths for AI and Machine Learning gives you more understanding of how all the AI models work and a more of a realistic side which is what AI is based off of.
The Computer Science Society has helped me and many other students in many different ways.
It allowed me to make friends, and join in with events such as workshops, seminars, hackathons.
If you wonder how AI is going to be used in the real world, we have a module here on this course called Current Topics in AIML which allows us to see what current researchers here at Birmingham are doing within this field.
I definitely think this course will benefit me a lot going forward.
Obviously at the moment with the AI boom, put it this way, having that deeper understanding of how everything works is going to benefit getting me many different jobs.
I could become an AI engineer, I can become a data engineer, a data scientist.
There are so many aspects that you learn in this course that can be used going forward into your future career, which I think is amazing.

Course Structure Our MSc is a 12-month full-time advanced course, comprising of lectures, coursework assignments, student presentations, individual study and a research project.
This term focusses on theoretical foundations and scientific principles of AI and Machine Learning, as well as some of their core methodologies. You'll complete compulsory modules which will provide you with mathematical tools to formulate, analyse and understand AI and Machine Learning systems. You'll also have a choice of specialised optional modules.
Teaching is delivered predominantly through lectures, with assessment provided using a mix of coursework and examination. Coursework is typically completed during the term and exams in the main summer exam period.
This term builds on foundations acquired in the autumn. Besides offering further choices of specialised modules it will also provide you with a broad overview of current issues and topics in AI and Machine Learning through a compulsory module.
In this module each week is dedicated to a different topic and delivered by an expert in the field. Exams typically take place from the first week of May to the first week of June.
After the main summer exam period, the summer is dedicated to your research project. You'll work closely with an academic supervisor on a live research project. This could be empirical or theory based, or a mixture of the two. It mus
