Prepare for a career in the nuclear industry through our Nuclear Decommissioning and Waste Management Masters programme. Develop the scientific understanding and practical skills to address challenges in nuclear decommissioning, waste management and remediation.
Enhance your understanding of nuclear sciences, geosciences and materials science, preparing you for an exciting job or research role. There’s a high demand for skilled graduates in this field as work continues to decommission the current fleet of reactors.

Autumn term You'll begin the programme with an intro/induction day and then focus on gaining fundamentals in nuclear science and technology in terms of gaining knowledge and experience of practical and computing skills. Later on in the term you'll begin to learn specialist knowledge in your chosen area.
You'll continue to attain more specialist advanced knowledge in your chosen area. Practical/computing work will still continue followed by exams typically taking place in May.
The summer is dedicated to your research project. You'll work closely with an academic or industry supervisor on a live research project. This could be experimental and lab based, theoretical and literature based, involve modelling, or be a mixture of all three elements. This project will be concluded in the first half of September.

To gain a place at Birmingham you will need to meet our general entry requirements, as well as those specific to your course. Your application will be reviewed by the course’s Admissions Tutor, who will decide whether your application should receive an offer.
2:1 Honours degree in a relevant subject. (eg, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, mathematics, geoscience or any physical sciences subject). 2.2 degrees may be considered on a case-by-case basis depending on modules taken.
If you are unsure if you meet our entry requirements, you can also contact the admissions department to discuss whether your application would be considered.
English language requirements If you are an international student, you will need to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification or a Presessional English course.
For this course we require IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band, which is equivalent to:
TOEFL iBT taken before January 2026: 80 overall with no less than 19 in Reading, 19 Listening, 21 Speaking and 19 in Writing
TOEFL iBT taken from January 2026: 4.5 Overall with no less than 4 in each skill
Pearson Test of English (PTE): Academic 64 with no less than 59 in all four skills
Cambridge English: C1 Advanced - minimum overall score of 169, with no less than 162 in any component
LanguageCert ESOL SELT (UKVI): B2 'Communicator' with no less than 25 in each skill
If you have a conditional offer for Birmingham where English is a requirement, you can take a Presessional English course as an alternative to retaking IELTS or a similar qualification. We offer on-campus courses all year round starting from September including additional online courses in the summer term. Teaching takes place in small classes with no more than 18 students to maximise class participation.
