This course has taught me a lot about various omics, which I wasn't familiar with before. Thanks to the dedication of my professors, I have learned a lot about how omics data can be analysed using different algorithms.
Course Structure This course will run over 12 months, full-time. It can also be undertaken on a part-time basis.
This programme can also be taken as a PGDip or PGCert which run for the following:
PGDip FT - 8 months • PGDip PT - 16 months • PGCert FT - 4 months • PGCert PT - 8 months
While the exact content may change, here’s what you can expect to study each term. This is based on a full time Masters course.
In the first term, you'll study Essentials of Maths and Statistics, Genomics and Next Generation Sequencing, and Data Analytics and Statistical Machine Learning. You'll also do a group project to learn basic programming and biology needed for the course.
In the second term, you'll study Metabolomics and Advanced Omics, and Computational Biology for Complex Systems. You'll learn to analyse data from various omics fields using statistical machine learning and understand how genome dynamics relate to ecosystems. You'll also keep working on the group project from term one.
The summer term will be dedicated to your individual thesis project. You'll work on a real-life bioinformatics project, gaining practical experience in solving bioinformatics problems.

To gain a place at Birmingham you will need to meet our general entry requirements, as well as those specific to your course. Your application will be reviewed by the course’s Admissions Tutor, who will decide whether your application should receive an offer.
You should have, or expect to get, a 2:1 honours degree or higher in a field related to quantitative knowledge from sciences, technology, engineering, or medical fields.
Common degrees include Biology, Biomedical Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Pharmacology. Other relevant subjects are Biochemistry, Genetics, Genomics, Medicine, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Biostatistics, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Systems Biology, Botany, Ecology, Zoology, and Marine Biology.
English language requirements If you are an international student, you will need to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification or a Presessional English course.

If you have a conditional offer for Birmingham where English is a requirement, you can take a Presessional English course as an alternative to retaking IELTS or a similar qualification. We offer on-campus courses all year round starting from September including additional online courses in the summer term. Teaching takes place in small classes with no more than 18 students to maximise class participation.
