Study on the UK's first and longest running MSc in Hydrogeology. Benefit from over 50 years of internationally recognised experience and expertise. Combining renowned history with a modern curriculum, our Hydrogeology MSc will build your skills to address pressing global water challenges.
You will be provided with a complete education in fundamental elements of groundwater science and engineering. Alongside lots of industry involvement, this course equips you with skills to tackle any groundwater problems anywhere in the world.
I really appreciate the variation in types of learning. Classes are cycling from inorganic chemistry to deriving equations to hydrological processes.
Course Structure This 12-month full-time course includes core modules in the first term and a selection of optional modules in the second. A part-time option is also available, with a personalised study plan developed early on to accommodate your other commitments.
In Semester 1, you will study the following:
Groundwater Hydraulics (20 credits)
Surface Water and Groundwater Interactions - Theory, GIS and Programming (20 credits)
Inorganic Chemistry and Groundwater & Borehole Design, Constructions and Maintenance (20 credits)
In Semester 2, you will study:
Groundwater Organic Contaminant Pollution and Remediation (20 credits)
Groundwater Flow and Contaminant Transport Modelling (20 credits)
Water Resources Studies and Further Topics (20 credits)
In the summer period, students will undertake their Independent Project (60 credits)

To gain a place at Birmingham you will need to meet our general entry requirements, as well as those specific to your course. Your application will be reviewed by the course’s Admissions Tutor, who will decide whether your application should receive an offer.
2:1 Honours Degree in a relevant discipline
At least an upper second class honours (2:1) degree in a relevant subject is normally required, but we will consider alternative qualifications and experience.
English language requirements If you are an international student, you will need to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification or a Presessional English course.
For this course we require IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band, which is equivalent to:
TOEFL iBT taken before January 2026: 80 overall with no less than 19 in Reading, 19 Listening, 21 Speaking and 19 in Writing
TOEFL iBT taken from January 2026: 4.5 Overall with no less than 4 in each skill
Pearson Test of English (PTE): Academic 64 with no less than 59 in all four skills
Cambridge English: C1 Advanced - minimum overall score of 169, with no less than 162 in any component
LanguageCert ESOL SELT (UKVI): B2 'Communicator' with no less than 25 in each skill
If you have a conditional offer for Birmingham where English is a requirement, you can take a Presessional English course as an alternative to retaking IELTS or a similar qualification. We offer on-campus courses all year round starting from September including additional online courses in the summer term. Teaching takes place in small classes with no more than 18 students to maximise class participation.
