[Victor] My name's Victor, I'm studying Geotechnical Engineering at Birmingham.
[Robyn] My name is Robyn, and I'm studying the Master's Geotechnical Engineering programme.
[Victor] So I chose to study Geotechnical Engineering at Birmingham due to its excellent track record in industry, and its highly applicable selection of modules to my job.
[Robyn]I've just come straight from an undergraduate in Geology, here. So firstly, I chose Birmingham because I know the university, I have friends here. I quite like doing something more applied within geology, and Geotechnical sort of fit that.
[Victor] So my favourite aspect of the course has to be the module format because I find that taking it one module at a time really allows you to apply yourself to the content and get more out of the course.
[Robyn] One module I've particularly enjoyed whilst on this course has been Soil Mechanics, which is one that I think is feared because it's quite mathematical, but actually it's introduced very well. I've enjoyed learning the technical aspect of how the ground works, especially coming from Geology where I did an overview of how the ground works, getting to understand how it responds to different conditions, I found really interesting. I've also enjoyed studying alongside people doing the Degree Apprenticeship, and those doing part-time, because you can kind of get industry knowledge from them. It's kind of already benefitted me in my career considering I've got a job. I've been able to get onto a grad scheme after this, and I've had a few offers, so it's been quite an employable Master's.
[Victor] Because the course is accredited by the ICE, it fulfils their requirements for further learning, and that's going to help me in my journey towards chartership.
The MSc Geotechnical Engineering has enhanced my understanding of the behaviour of soil under different loading situations and equipped me with skills to undertake geotechnical analysis and design both analytically and numerically.

Course structure Teaching is typically delivered in self-contained module-blocks (part-time students attend on-campus sessions for approximately 8 or 9 days per module). You'll develop your research skills while undertaking your individual project. Module-blocks include lectures, a practical, worked-examples/tutorials, as well as time dedicated for independent study. Assessments are completed within the module-block, giving more time in the summer period to focus on the project.
In the autumn term you'll cover several taught modules which focus on the fundamental behaviour of various ground conditions, and you'll be introduced to key approaches to understanding and quantifying these behaviours.
