Why Study MSc Robotics? | University of Birmingham Duration: 01.33
[Georgina] My name is Georgina and I'm studying MSc Robotics at Birmingham.
I chose to study MSc Robotics at Birmingham based on the breadth of the course. You've got the computer science side, and the mechanical engineering side. You get to study things like computer vision and robot vision, as well as the mechanical engineering side of industrial automation and using robots in factory cells.
My favourite aspect of the course has been the team-based assignments, getting to work with lots of people from interdisciplinary backgrounds.
My favourite module has been Applied Robotics because we got to work in teams of four on a robotic arm, using it in a business capacity, so we got given a specific task and we had to work towards solving it together.
We also use a wide variety of software that's used within industry, which gives us exposure to what we might be working with in the future.
Also, we have lots of industry-compatible dissertation topics, which allows us to actually utilise our skills in a way that our future employers will find beneficial.
I've been part of the Hiking Society; we go on hikes every weekend to national parks and also around the Birmingham area on train trips as well.
Coming from a computer science background, studying MSc Robotics has allowed me to go into a variety of different engineering fields - including control engineering, electrical engineering, or mechanical. Which has opened up doors within my future career prospects.
I chose the University of Birmingham because it was one of the few schools internationally that would allow me to pursue a degree specifically in Robotics. This was very important to me as most degree programmes offer Robotics as a specialty or concentration. Through those programmes, you end up taking many unnecessary courses.
