Why Study Advanced Chemical Engineering? | University of Birmingham Title: Why Study Advanced Chemical Engineering? | University of Birmingham
Duration: 00.54
Begins
[Stephanie] My name is Stephanie, and I studied MSc Advanced Chemical Engineering.
I made my decision to study Advanced Chemical Engineering at Birmingham because it presented me with options: project management, business strategy and development.
Combining that with chemical engineering principles was a good combination for industry and that’s one of the main reasons I studied here.
I'll say that the support from faculty was amazing, it was phenomenal.
My studies here helped me to get the qualification to practice as a chemical engineer in the UK.
I'll also say that I received some transferable skills: data analysis, modelling simulation, that I’m using currently in my present job.
So from the University of Birmingham, I’ll say it has really pushed my career forward and given me a foot here to practice chemical engineering in the UK.
Ends
Msc Advanced Chemical Engineering offers thematic pathway modules which enable me to develop and extend my knowledge in areas of Chemical Engineering in which I am interested.

Course structure The MSc is a 1 year full-time advanced course which can also be taken on a part-time basis over 2-3 years. The Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) lasts for eight months and does not include the research project. Modules are also available individually to fulfil continuing professional development needs.
This term focusses on fundamental engineering and scientific principles. You'll complete core modules which underpin the accreditation requirements of an MSc in chemical engineering. In addition, you'll have a choice of specialised optional modules.
Teaching is delivered predominantly through lectures and tutorials, with assessment provided using a comprehensive mix of coursework and examination.
Alongside core subjects, you will learn more specialist knowledge in your chosen, optional modules. This term has a focus on assessment with coursework deadlines in this period, and exams typically taking place from the first week of May to the first week of June. This is also a time when you’ll start working on your summer research project.
The summer is dedicated to your research project. You'll work closely with an academic supervisor on a live research project. This could be experimental and lab based, theoretical and literature based, involve modelling, or be a mixture of all three elements. This project will be concluded by the end of August with marks and feedback delivered in September.
