This programme focuses on spirituality as a key dimension of religion. Spirituality is often defined as individualised, experience-oriented religion, in which legal, doctrinal, and institutional aspects are perceived to have secondary importance. Praxis, rather than belief, is emphasised, and orthodoxy is often challenged with heterodox ideas and practices. In this programme, we focus on spirituality and religion as they manifest themselves in the most diverse areas of culture and society, both in the past and in the present. Our students are trained to use both historical and social-scientific methods. The programme has three core courses and a number of electives, which form the basis for three different specialisations. For students particularly interested in Western esotericism, especially from a historical perspective, we offer Spirituality and Esotericism in Western Culture. For students interested in the contemporary religious landscape, there is Religion and Spirituality in Contemporary Societies. Finally, for students with an interest in Islam, there is the possibility to opt for Spirituality and Religion in Islam. As a student in this programme, you will learn to conduct research from a critical perspective, to work with various kinds of primary sources, and to present your results in an elaborate, coherent way. Upon completion of the programme, you will have a firm grasp of the historical roots of spirituality and the changing role of religion in society. You can use this expertise and related skills in your future careers in such fields as research, policy, education, or in the cultural sector.

1 Check entry requirements prior education

You are eligible to apply for admission if you hold an academic Bachelor's degree from an accredited research university in:

• Religious Studies
• the Humanities, Social Sciences, Law or Liberal Arts and Sciences with a minimum of 30 ECTS in the academic field of Religious Studies

Some specific academic Bachelor's degrees obtained in the Netherlands grant automatic admission to this Master's programme. If you graduate with one of these degrees, which are listed under "No application form required" above, you only have to register Studielink. You don't have to submit an application form in SIS.

If you obtained your degree outside the Netherlands, the minimum level of your diploma should be at least equivalent to or comparable to three years of a Dutch research-oriented university. The assessment of whether your degree is considered equivalent will be completed by professional diploma evaluators according to the guidelines set forth by Nuffic, the independent organisation for internationalisation in education in the Netherlands. Pre-Master’s

If you do not meet the entry requirements above, for example if you have a relevant degree from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences ( HBO ) or an equivalent thereof, you might be eligible to eliminate your deficiencies by completing the pre-Master’s programme in Spirituality and Religion first. The Admissions Board will determine if your academic background is sufficient for admission to the (pre-)Master’s programme. Admission to the (pre-)Master’s programme is not guaranteed.

• 2. Check entry requirements: language proficiency

New Master's students should be able to speak, read, write and understand English at an advanced academic level. Please check carefully on the page below whether:

• you already meet the English language requirements based on your prior education; or
• you need to arrange to take an official English language test. If you have serious reasons to believe you should be exempted from taking an official English language test, you will need to file a strongly motivated, official exemption request at the Graduate School of Humanities’ Examinations Board. Please note that there is a strict deadline in place for such a request, which is one month prior to the Master's application deadline.
