The Public History MA combines cutting-edge, research-led study of how history is produced, shared and experienced in public contexts, with practical training in the ways historical knowledge and heritage are interpreted, communicated and experienced by diverse audiences. Through a distinctive blend of critical inquiry and creative practice, you will explore the role of history across museums, heritage, media, culture, technology and community settings.
Distinctively global and interdisciplinary in approach, the course is based at UCL East and brings together perspectives from history, heritage studies, media studies, creative humanities and urban studies. You will examine how public history takes different forms across time and place, engaging with key debates around memory, heritage, activism, policy, commercial history-making, institutional and community histories, and practices of remembrance.
Alongside this critical foundation, you will develop practical skills through project-based work and collaborative public history production. Working with experienced practitioner-mentors, you will design and create public history outputs while reflecting critically on the challenges and opportunities involved in making history accessible, meaningful and relevant to different audiences. The course’s emphasis on combining theory with practice enables you to develop both intellectual expertise and professional experience in the field.
You will develop the practical and professional skills required for careers across the media, arts and cultural sectors, heritage organisations, education, the civil service and business.
Through debate, seminars and tutorials, you will develop strong communication, presentation and negotiation skills. Project-based learning will enable you to work collaboratively, manage projects and organise your time effectively. Training in digital and media-based approaches to public history will enhance your ability to communicate historical ideas to diverse audiences across different platforms.
You will gain experience of applying historical knowledge beyond academia, developing the ability to engage public audiences, work with cultural and community partners, and critically evaluate how history is presented and used in contemporary society.
