The fast-growing IoT field faces challenges from the interaction of digital and physical processes. This course prepares you to become an expert in IoT, suitable for industries such as manufacturing, consumer electronics, security, mining, design, transport, exploration, and healthcare.
This course combines academic expertise in Systems Engineering for the Internet of Things with insights from industry experts and real-world customers. Hands-on experience is central to this degree, with multiple projects throughout the course.
You will gain a core understanding of designing, deploying, and using distributed sensors and actuators in the real world, along with entrepreneurial skills and practical experience.
Graduates will be equipped with a broad range of skills, knowledge, and experience needed by employers. You’ll have in-depth knowledge of sensor systems, embedded networked systems, and responsible system design, along with an understanding of socio-technical frameworks, privacy, security, ethical, and legal issues.
You’ll learn to identify real-world problems, consider business and marketing strategies, collaborate in teams, and communicate complex ideas clearly. What’s more, hands-on experience with numerous deployments during the degree ensures you can bring practical and innovative ideas to employers.
You’ll also develop reflective skills, ethical awareness, and an understanding of user and societal needs, which are key traits in UCL’s Pillars of Employability.
As a relatively new course that admitted its first cohort in September 2024, we are beginning to see our graduates move into exciting roles within IoT engineering, embedded systems, technical consulting, and deep tech ventures. Some have continued into doctoral research. With strong industry connections through the IXN (Industry Exchange Network) and hands-on project experience, graduates are well positioned for technical and leadership roles in the technology sector.
