The Architecture MArch (ARB/RIBA Part 2) is a two-year professionally accredited course. Taught through the Bartlett’s studio culture, the course encourages experimentation, critical thinking and design innovation.
Across the two years, you spend more than half your time learning in studios, or design units . Design units are small groups led by practising architects, designers and academics, each with its own architectural agenda, methods and approach to design research. At the start of each academic year, units present their themes and methodologies before students select their preferred units. Many students remain in the same unit across both years, developing an individual design position through sustained studio-based research and experimentation.
Alongside your studio work, you study architectural history and theory, technology, environment and professional practice. Through design projects, written research and technical investigation, you explore how architecture engages with social, cultural, political, environmental and material questions. Your work develops through a range of media, including analogue and digital drawing, physical and computational models, photography, animation, video, 1:1 installations and more.
Architecture MArch develops creative, technical and critical judgement required for contemporary architectural practice. You strengthen your ability to develop and iteratively refine complex design proposals, test ideas through research and representation, and communicate architectural thinking clearly through drawing, models, writing and presentations.
You also build the ability to respond to professional, environmental, ethical and social considerations within your design work. These skills prepare you for Architectural practice and also support wider careers across design, research, construction, cultural production and the built environment.
92.3% of Architecture MArch graudates were in highly-skilled work of further postgraduate study within 15 months of graduation.
Graduates of Architecture MArch go on to work across leading international architecture, engineering and design practices, cultural organisations and research institutions. Recent graduate destinations include Foster + Partners, Zaha Hadid Architects, Heatherwick Studio, Grimshaw, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, Wilkinson Eyre, AHMM, Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF), Populous and WOHA.
Graduates have also progressed into multidisciplinary engineering and built environment practices including Arup, Atkins and Building Design Partnership (BDP), as well as roles in higher education, urban development, cultural production and independent creative practice*.
