Bringing a new medicine to patients is a complex process that requires careful testing to ensure it is safe and effective. Clinical Drug Development covers the key stages where new treatments are tested in people, making it essential for translating scientific discoveries into therapies that improve health and save lives. As demand for new and better medicines grows, there is an increasing need for specialists who understand both the science and the regulatory frameworks that govern how drugs are developed and approved.
This MSc equips you with that expertise. You study clinical trial design, regulatory strategy, and disease modelling, learning how medicines progress from early research to approval. Through taught sessions and real-world case studies, you examine current challenges in drug development and build the skills to evaluate scientific evidence critically. You also gain a strong grounding in ethical and governance frameworks, including Good Clinical Practice, that underpin safe and responsible research.
What distinguishes this course is its integration within a leading biomedical research environment. Based in the UCL Faculty of Medical Sciences and closely linked to UCLH hospitals, you learn alongside researchers and clinicians who are actively leading clinical trials and developing new therapies. Unlike many programmes, this direct access to live clinical research and translational science is embedded in how you learn and apply your knowledge.
You will build expertise in clinical trial design, regulatory affairs, disease modelling, and the statistical methods used in clinical research, enabling you to design, analyse, and interpret studies in real-world settings.
You also develop the ability to critically evaluate scientific literature, a core skill in both industry and academic roles. Your three-month research project provides hands-on, industry-relevant experience, demonstrating your ability to contribute to research from an early stage. Alongside these technical capabilities, you develop key professional skills, including scientific writing, data analysis, and the ability to communicate complex findings clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Through engagement with research-active academics and industry-linked teaching, you gain insight into current practice and build skills directly aligned with employer expectations, preparing you for careers across the life sciences sector or progression to PhD study.
Graduates of this MSc pursue careers across the pharmaceutical industry, clinical research, and academic medicine. Many go on to PhD study at UCL and at institutions worldwide.
According to the Graduate Outcomes survey carried out by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), looking at the destinations of graduates in the 2018–2024 cohorts, 95% of Clinical Drug Development MSc graduates were in work or further study. Of these, 77% were in employment, the majority in highly skilled roles, and 18% were continuing their studies.
