Advances in digital technology and artificial intelligence, combined with the increasing availability of detailed building performance data, are changing how buildings are designed, engineered and operated. The Smart Buildings and Digital Engineering MSc focuses on the digital transformation of the built environment and explores how engineering expertise, data and digital technologies can be used to create smarter, more energy-efficient and sustainable buildings that respond to the needs of their occupants.
You explore the scientific principles that underpin building design and operation, developing an understanding of how fabric, services, controls and occupants interact to shape building performance. You learn to use industry-standard building simulation software such as EnergyPlus and DesignBuilder, applying these tools to real-world challenges. You also gain hands-on experience with more advanced techniques, including deploying machine learning tools, applying advanced analytical methods and developing and interrogating digital twins to support data-driven decision-making in building design and operation.
A key focus of the course is how buildings operate in practice. Through individual and group project work, lab activities and site visits, you explore how building systems are monitored, analysed and optimised in real settings, developing the technical judgement needed to make informed decisions and design towards best performance.
Graduates are prepared for specialist roles across engineering, sustainability, digital engineering and consultancy. Potential career paths include Building Services Engineer, Smart Building Consultant, Building Energy Analyst, Building Physics Engineer, Digital Buildings Engineer and Energy Consultant.
The course develops skills in building performance analysis, digital modelling, machine learning, monitoring and energy management. Through industry-informed teaching and experience with tools such as EnergyPlus, DesignBuilder, Python and Modelica, you gain technical expertise that is in demand across the built environment sector. You also develop the ability to analyse complex challenges and make informed engineering decisions.
The digital transformation of our built environment is creating high demand globally for engineering graduates with the knowledge and skills acquired in this course. Smart Buildings and Digital Engineering MSc alumni have gone on to work for organisations including Arup, WSP, AtkinsRéalis, Mott MacDonald, Savills and XCO2, in roles such as Digital Consultant, Building Energy Modeller, Building Physics Engineer, Building Automation Engineer and Sustainability Consultant. Some graduates also progress to doctoral research*.
