Biotechnology, computation and climate change are reshaping how we design, build and live. Bio-Integrated Design MSc responds to these shifts through exploratory biological research and experimentation, developing new biomaterials and regenerative ecologies for future built environments. Nature sits at the centre of the course, not only as inspiration but as an active agent in the design process.
You work across the lab, studio and workshop, building skills in experimental design, computational modelling, and manufacturing. In research-led modules, you learn to grow and test living systems, design with bio-based materials, and use techniques in simulation, fabrication and data analysis. Through an iterative design-build-test process, you develop prototypes that explore how biological processes can inform materials, environmental systems and built environment applications.
You also develop advanced research skills, enabling you to define and pursue your own area of specialisation. The course culminates in an integrated research project, where you carry out in-depth experimentation and produce an original output combining scientific investigation, empirical testing and design development.
Bio-Integrated Design MSc equips students with advanced scientific and design skills to address environmental challenges. You build foundations in biological systems, digital design, fabrication and research methods, before progressing to advanced, research-led study through laboratory, workshop and independent enquiry-led projects.
You develop systems-level thinking by exploring how biological growth, materials and processes can inform the built environment. Working across architecture, design and biochemical engineering, you learn to collaborate across disciplines and respond creatively to complex problems. Sustainability is embedded throughout the course, including carbon and water footprints, nutrient cycles and biodiversity.
Through made work, presentations, exhibitions and a substantial illustrated research almanac, you demonstrate your ability to propose original ideas, deploy critical thinking and communicate with technical fluency.
Bio-Integrated Design graduates have progressed into careers spanning biological research, sustainable materials innovation, computational design, architecture and interdisciplinary product development. The course prepares graduates for work in industry, either within established sectors or in companies specialising in environmental consultancy or sustainable innovation, including GreenDelta and Atelier Ten. Graduates have also contributed their technical skills at biodesign, product and science companies, including Faber Futures and Vivo Barefoot, or founded their own ventures, such as Tattva.*
