This course is positioned at the science-business interface. You work on identifying, shaping and funding novel opportunities that have potential social or economic value. The content draws on world-leading innovation from areas such as cell and gene therapies, digital innovation, imaging, neuroscience, AI discovery and translational medicine. You learn to navigate the complex decision-making processes in funding innovation, and the entrepreneurial mindset to make it happen.
The home department for this degree is co-located within an NHS hospital, and enjoys a global reputation for innovation, working with partners such as Google Deepmind and producing spinouts such as Tenpoint Therapeutics and Cascader. In the first five years of this MSc, twenty three start-ups have been created, with two of these being accepted onto y-combinator, the US incubator that produced Coinbase, AirBnB and Ginkgo Bioworks (data on company destinations from department records).
This course is for individuals who want to build their career at the bioscience-business interface, either in a start-up, as innovators in a research-based organisation, as investors or consultants, or in technology transfer.

This course opens up awareness of careers that work with science, rather than in science. Expertise in the science-business interface is highly relevant for big company settings such as life science consultancy, bioscience investment, and pharmaceuticals. It opens up career paths in technology transfer, clinical trials, pharmacy and innovation consultancy. Regulation, communication, digital health and policy roles also require science-business translators. A significant portion of graduates build towards starting their own business, while on the course and after. A number of high-growth businesses have been directly incubated and supported by the course.
