You will develop an advanced understanding of neuroscience and cognitive science, exploring how mechanisms at the molecular, cellular, network and systems levels influence normal brain function and disease. Through a flexible, individualised curriculum delivered across London and Paris, you will tailor your studies to your own academic and research interests while gaining practical experience through laboratory-based projects.
The course develops key research skills, including experimental design, critical evaluation of scientific literature, data analysis, scientific communication and interdisciplinary problem-solving. With opportunities to define your own research pathway and gain substantial international research experience, the course provides excellent preparation for doctoral study and careers in brain and mind sciences. You will graduate with an MSc from UCL at the end of Year 1 and an international Master’s-level diploma from Sorbonne University and École Normale Supérieure on completion of Year 2.
The course is suitable for students who will benefit from a personalised course of study and research in the neurosciences and cognitive science disciplines relevant to a career in brain and mind sciences. All students will be rigorously selected on the basis of academic excellence and academic recommendation.
Graduates of the Brain and Mind Sciences MSc develop a deep interdisciplinary understanding of neuroscience and cognitive science, alongside strong analytical, research, and communication skills. They gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge techniques, collaborate across disciplines and cultures, and are well-prepared for careers in research, healthcare, or further academic study.
The opportunity to undertake original research in two centres of excellence makes the successful student more attractive to potential PhD supervisors, as evidenced by the fact that the majority of graduating students go on to full-time doctoral studies. Ninety per cent of graduates from this course were in work or further study within 15 months of completing their studies. This data has been obtained from the Graduate Outcomes survey which is carried out by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), looking at the destinations of graduates in the 2018–2024 cohort.
