Cities are increasingly being shaped by neoliberal, market-led policies that deepen inequalities and increase the vulnerabilities of already marginalised communities. These challenges are intensified by the overlapping effects of climate change, displacement, disaster and colonial legacies. In response, the Building and Urban Design in Development MSc equips you to rethink how cities are designed and to develop more inclusive, just and sustainable approaches to urban transformation around the world.
We take a political economy view of space and power, focusing on cities in the Global South to explore how spatial injustices manifest in different contexts. This course prepares you for your future career as an urban designer and built environment specialist. Through critical theory, studio projects and field-based learning, you identify shared challenges and opportunities for knowledge exchange between cities and develop practical approaches to urban transformation.
In 2026, students worked with Pelican House, a countercultural cooperative and social centre in East London, exploring radical infrastructures, collective practices, and alternative urban networks. The design workshop focused on rethinking urban networks for transformative action, culminating in the pamphlet In‑out[side]. Watch the video to learn more. As part of the Overseas Practice Engagement, students collaborated with partners such as MSTC (Movimento Sem Teto do Centro) to investigate occupations as radical spaces of urban struggle. They analysed governance structures, political actors, and spatial transformations, developing design‑research frameworks for contested housing and urban rights. You will develop the critical thinking, action research, spatial analysis, design and creative skills needed to work in architectural and urban design practices, NGOs, development agencies, social movements, urban think tanks and public bodies.
You will graduate with the ability to translate complex urban challenges into grounded design strategies, work collaboratively with diverse communities, navigate complex political and institutional environments, and communicate spatial ideas across professional and non‑professional audiences. These are capacities that are essential for roles in socially engaged urban design, policy, advocacy, and development practice.
We offer a Dissertation Fellowship Scheme that gives students, selected through a competitive process, the opportunity to work on real-world topics proposed by partner organisations.These fellowships align your dissertation with current development and planning practice and may lead to further research collaborations, internships or employment.
