This course is designed for undergraduate degree holders with no professional experience teaching English. It connects cutting-edge theory, research, and practice in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). After completing the course, you’ll be ready to teach English all over the world, as a theory- and research-informed practitioner.
In line with the IOE’s holistic approach to education, you’ll explore popular approaches used to teach English alongside ideas about how languages are learned and the ways language teaching and learning are often researched. As such, this master’s goes far deeper than typical vocational certificates and diplomas that provide only an introduction to the field.
Using theoretical and practical foundations you develop in the first term, you’ll go on to explore how TESOL researchers generate knowledge about a wide range of issues, from individual learner differences to the use of generative AI for language teaching and learning.
As a graduate of this master’s, you’ll develop a comprehensive set of theory- and research-informed English language teaching skills, along with a deep understanding of the mechanics of language learning and teaching.
You’ll be prepared to begin your teaching career with extensive skills and practical strategies for lesson planning, teaching and assessment (including the latest technology and AI-enabled approaches and techniques).
You’ll learn to adapt, innovate and critically evaluate existing methods and approaches to fit the unique needs of multilingual and multicultural learners in a wide range of contexts.
You’ll also develop your research literacy, critical analysis and independent research skills, allowing you to go beyond the traditional frameworks and rigorously deploy innovative approaches in your own work.
Through your experiences as part of a diverse cohort, you’ll develop your skills as a globally aware intercultural communicator and educator.
Graduates from this Master’s go on to support English language learning all over the world, through teaching and research.
Typically, graduates take on roles as English language teachers in schools, universities, private language centres, international organisations, and global education centres.
