What does good science education look like? Through critically engaging with the theories, policies and practices that underpin science education we take a deeper look into understanding how science education can build a scientifically literate society, empower learners, retain teachers and advance science education policy.
UCL’s Science Education MA is for educators looking to explore, and help find, the answers to questions such as these. Whether you’re working as a practising or aspiring teacher of science, a policymaker, or are involved in science education in a different setting or format, this course will provide you with a deep insight into contemporary science education research and practice.
The course begins with a deep exploration of the theories underpinning science education today, from constructivism to socially-critical pedagogies. Positioning yourself within these debates and ideas, you’ll explore and challenge them, and then reflect on how to apply them to your own setting and role.

The work you do linking theory to practice, and exploring different perspectives related to science education, will support you to advance in your career as a practising teacher or educator. You will also develop in-demand research skills and learn how to think critically about, and evaluate, research. These capabilities will make you a sought-after practitioner and valued contributor to any education-related setting.
Graduates from this course have gone on to be successful in a wide variety of contexts related to education. Those that are already teaching science have often been promoted. Those that are yet to teach have gone on to work in schools or informal learning institutions or pursued a professional qualification (PGCE) to gain QTS (qualified teaching status) to teach science in schools. Others have found new opportunities in different educational phases (from early years through to higher education) or in science education policy or research. Some graduates go on to work internationally on science-related education and projects, whilst others undertake further research on PhD courses.
