Normally applicants are expected to have at least a lower second-class Bachelor’s degree from a UK university, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, usually in mathematics or in education. Professional experience of teaching or tutoring will also be considered as relevant experience. In addition, applicants should demonstrate commitment and a clearly expressed interest in issues relating to mathematics education, through the submission of an additional specific maths education written task.
What should we be teaching in mathematics, and which approaches and frameworks are we using to teach it? How does the latest research evidence fit with Government promoted approaches? And is current curriculum design and classroom practice enough, not only to inspire the mathematicians of tomorrow but to give everyone the confidence to use mathematics in their everyday lives?
This Mathematics Education MA equips you to challenge dominant narratives and explore alternative perspectives on mathematics education. You’ll learn to analyse, evaluate and help develop diverse ways to enhance mathematics pedagogy and practice – as a teacher, policymaker or researcher – in ways that better serve the needs of learners, organisations and society.
Focusing on the interplay between research, policy and practice across all education phases, from early years to higher education, you’ll investigate the diverse social, cultural and political influences impacting the way mathematics is taught here in England and globally.
You’ll graduate with a solid understanding of current issues and debates in mathematics education in England and internationally. You will gain the critical thinking and deep subject expertise to be able to enhance your own or others’ teaching practice, contribute to policy, or continue with your own mathematics education research. Your familiarity with research methodologies, and ability to evaluate, synthesise and present materials will equip you to apply relevant research to professional practice and propose evidence-based alternatives to current mathematics pedagogy and practice.
Those outside teaching will also go away with strong skills in writing, critical analysis and an understanding of how a mathematical perspective differs from other forms of reasoning.
Students from this course are helping to transform the way we approach mathematics teaching across all education phases, with 87.5% of graduates in in highly-skilled work or postgraduate-level study 15 months after leaving*.
