With this course, you’ll take the theories and principles of linguistics and communication out into the real world, to see how the words we use and the decisions made around language shape lives, workplaces, communities and cultures.
Using a blend of cognitive, social, discursive and critical theoretical approaches, you’ll develop research skills specific to your chosen field, so you can investigate how language functions in the everyday life contexts and situations that are most relevant to you.
Here at the UCL Centre for Applied Linguistics , you’ll work alongside pioneering academics and researchers who are redefining how we understand language, language education, and communication.
This Master’s provides a broad range of transferable analytical and critical skills, along with a deep understanding of how language interacts with our social and psychological environments to shape our experiences and perceptions.
You’ll get to pursue optional specialisms aimed at improving the capabilities and career prospects of language teachers, communication and language-related professionals. During the dissertation process, you will have the chance to work one-on-one with a specialist researcher and develop your expertise in line with your academic and professional interests.
Your depth of applied linguistic knowledge will also prepare you for research, or further training in forensic, clinical and computational linguistics.
